Convert SIP trunking to E1 - ISDN PRI or R2 MFC

Saudi Telecom company (STC) started to provide SIP trunking for business customers. Heard that there is no more traditional DID DOD over E1.These services allow callers to make direct inward dialing (DID) or direct outward dialing (DOD) calls without an operator's assistance by connecting company's PBX to STC's exchange.

Business customer PBX systems and call centers usually want E1 PRI. The PRI stands for Primary Rate Interface, a term that comes from a set of telecommunication standards called ISDN or Integrated Services Digital Network. What PRI adds to a standard channelized E1 line is a dedicated signaling channel that makes call setup and teardown faster, plus the ability to provide Caller ID and ANI (Automatic Number Identification.) A E1 PRI line gives you 30 channels that can each carry one telephone call plus the data or signaling channel.

Many of corporate customers running on TDM PBX having E1 PRI interface which will not support SIP trunking. STC is providing point to point Ethernet (dedicated for voice) to deliver SIP trunking service without authentication.

VOIP Gateway equipment can act an important part in above scenario. It can convert SIP trunks to Legacy E1 (ISDN PRI/R2 MFC).one equipment can carry up to 4 E1 .And this equipment is now available in Saudi market (contact me on mail@jaizal.com for details)

Fix - Cannot Switch language at login screen

Many of laptops are coming now days with Windows 7 English preinstalled.those who are interested to change the interface to local language ,download the language pack files from Microsoft.com
(use Vistalizator if you have Home Basic or Home Premium versions )

How ever, you may face difficulties to type in local language at login screen if you did not setup your language setting properly while installing.follow the instruction below to re enable the language switching at logon screen.

Open Control Panel > Regional and Language Settings and go to Administrative tab

Click on Copy setting and enable Welcome screen and system accounts

Click Ok and now you can write password in your local language at login screen

Fix - Cannot open exe files after virus infection

You cannot open exe files when your computer infected with w32/sircam or any similar type of virus.when try to open any exe files or any programs , you may get thefollwing type of messages

The system cannot find the file
or Windows cannot file this file select program from a list

the reason is ,virus can change the default configuration for running EXE files. This may lead to failed operation when you try to run EXE files. the following solution will help you to fix the problem after removal of viruses

1- Go to start and click run
2- type command.com and press OK.this will open command prompt.
3- type cd\ and press enter to get root of C drive
4- type cd \windows press enter
5- Type copy regedit.exe regedit.com and then press Enter
6- Navigate to and select the key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
7- In the right pane, double-click the (Default) value.
8- Delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %*
Tip: Type the characters: quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.
9- Close Regedit utility and restart your computer.

Analog Port mapper is a free handy tool for port forwarding in windows PC's.As far as i know it is quiet easy to forward ports in linux machine, but in windows xp so difficult to forward a port unless we have enabled ICS .it is usual to think why needed a portforwarding in a particular windows xp machine.I had a situation to make me think about this feature.In one of my network scenario ,remote locations are connected via vpn clinet software .so i can access only the PC which is installed client software in the remote network.ones i needed to acces an IP camera which is connected in remote network,make me think about any ways to reach the IP camera.Bridging VPN adapter with remote network is not a proper solution because of difficulty in DHCP assignment of VPN adapter.
However this handy tool helped me to reach to the IP camera which is in remote network subnet.the tool forwading traffics comming from port 80 of VPN adapter,to the ip address of camera and make it possible to monitor the camera from head office.

Here I am going to explain how to Downgrade Vista to XP on New Laptops with 960/965/gm965 chipsets and the ALC268 realtek high definition sound card.
The Following method tested in Toshiba A200 PSAE3C and HP dv6500.but it may work with other Toshiba A200 Series and HP dv6000 series also depending on chipset.
First,backup your existing OS and files by creating recovery disks,read your manual for further details.
Download the following files which are needed for Disk Creation process

nLite
Intel SATA Driver
Microsoft High definition hotfix

Slipstream your Windows xp using nLite as follows

1. Copy The Windows XP SP2 cd which you have to a folder named xpsp2
2. download and install Intel SATA Driver
3. Download Microsoft High definition hotfix and extract it using winrar
4. Download and install nLite

Run nlite

Chose your Winxp folder and click Next
Click Next again until the below screen appear

Choose Drivers and Bootable cd then Click Next

Import Single Driver

Browse C:\Program Files\intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Driver\iastor.inf and click Open

Select Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M) then Click OK

Click Insert again and choose Multiple driver folder

Browse the Commonfiles Folder which you extracted from High definition hotfix then Click OK

To build a network bridge is easy through a Ethernet cable.It is used to connect two LAN segment. Making it trough a wireless link is not easier like Ethernet. The two segments will be in the same subnet and look like two Ethernet switches connected by a cable to all computers on the subnet.wireless bridge will be great idea when we don't want to run an Ethernet cable between two locations.
The following guide is explains building of a wireless repeater bridge using DD-WRT firmware from my experience
the example scenario as follows :-

Linksys WRT54G as primary router

Linksys WAP54G v3 as secondary access point

DD-WRT v24 Beta (08/15/07) micro Firmware to flash WAP54g

- Connection Type : Disabled

Today i have installed three Hp 4600n printer in a network,and configured it in windows vita clients.on next moment i got calls from users , they are facing problem when printing multiple pages ..prints only first page then giving message to select tray with red light..when pressing green button to continue the job, prints a error page (Unable to store job..) rather than the rest pages.
Hard to figure out the problem.Vista auto detects the driver.played in printer setting ,disabled ram disk .... but no hope.printer acting strange things ..at last i figured out that the problem is in driver. Vista auto detects only the PCL5 driver ..no way to update the driver.
so i installed printer in server as share printer ...when trying to access printer from clients , automatically installs the PCL6 driver in clients too. choosed PCL6 driver instead of PCL5... ..
now printers are working greatly...........

The SW Load on the Pilot DVD assumes that the “ATA control mode” setting is

“compatible”, which is default in the current pre-series BIOS version 0.12.

For running the SATA hard disk with all SATA features, BIOS has to be enabled for

AHCI mode of SATA hard disk.

If BIOS are in AHCI mode and the AHCI drivers are not installed in the OS, a “blue

screen” at boot will occur. Same for the other way around, AHCI driver installed and

BIOS with AHCI disabled.

BIOS setup Press “F2” at boot to go to BIOS settings. AMILO Pro V8010: Choose

“Advanced”. Set “ATA control mode” from “Compatible” to “Enhanced” and leave

“AHCI Configuration” setting “disabled”. LIFEBOOK E8020: Choose “Advanced”. and

then “Internal Device Configurations” Set “AHCI Configuration” setting “disabled”

1) Install Windows XP with SP1 or SP2 and make sure that the AHCI feature is

disabled in BIOS.

2) Reboot

3) Open Device Manager

Device Manager shows additional IDE/ATAPI controller entry:

“Intel® 82801FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers-2653”

Select tab: “Driver”

Click Button: “Update Driver”

Connect to Windows Update? Choose: “No, not this time”

Click Button: “Next”

Choose: “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)”

Click Button: “Next”

Choose: “Do not search. I will choose the driver to install.”

Click Button: “Next”

Click: “Have Disk”

Click: “Browse”

Select directory: “My Computer / SYSTEM (C:) / WINDOWS / Drivers / SATA” or

where you have placed the SATA AHCI driver.

Choose: “iaAHCI.inf”

Click button: “Open”

Click Button: “Ok”

Choose: “Intel® 82801FBM SATA AHCI Controller”

Click Button: “Next”

Update Driver Warning: Click: “Yes”

After processing click: “Finish”

Click: “Close”

Click: “Yes”

System does reboot!

3) Press “F2” at reboot for BIOS

Choose “Advanced”

Set “AHCI Configuration” to “enabled”

Exit saving changes

System reboots now in “enhanced mode AHCI enabled”

Device Manager IDE/ATAPI controller entry:

Note: If you want to change back to compatibility mode the similar procedure applies.

The location of the enhanced ATA driver is

“MyComputer/system/windows/drivers/IntChip”

and the model is

After reboot the BIOS setting can be changed back to “AHCI Configuration” setting

“disabled”

How to add music to a Powepoint presentation

here you will learn how to add music or song to a power point presentation and how to get it to play across multiple slides.
(also see below How to Embed mp3 Sounds )

Step 1. Choose your file which u need to add power point presentation.
MP3 format is the better file format for power point presentation . This has the smallest file size. However there is one big problem with mp3 files that you can only link but not embed mp3 files into PowerPoint.

Step 2. Insert the music in your PowerPoint presentation.

Then from the Files of Type drop down box select mp3 format.

You will then get a message about how you want the music to start

Step3 - Setting the music to play across multiple slides

A lot of people have asked if it is possible to keep the music playing across multiple slides- for example if you wanted to make a slide show of someone's life with music playing in the background - or it could be a useful feature at a trade show.

You do this using a feature called Custom Animation. Select your music file then Right click (not the usual left click) and select Custom Animation. You can do this by selecting Slide Show > Custom Animation

How you do this depends upon which version of PowerPoint you are using.

For older versions of PowerPoint

Then select Multimedia Settings afterwards and make sure that you have selected While Playing >Continue Slide show You will then need to set the Stop Playing button and enter in the Stop Playing > After number slides the number of slides that you would like the music to play for.

If you are using PowerPoint XP the procedure is slightly different

Custom Animation > Right Click on Media and select Effect Options

You will then need to set the Stop Playing button and enter in the Stop Playing > After number slides the number of slides that you would like the music to play for.

Step 4. (Almost there). How to embed music in your presentation

The last gotcha in the process is that the music may not be embedded in your PowerPoint presentation. This means that is you save your presentation onto a CD or you are to email it, then the music may not automatically go across. It all depends upon the file size of the music.

If you want the music to be embedded in the presentation you will need to follow a couple of steps.

1. Make sure your music is in WAV format (mp3 files can only be linked and not embedded)
2. Increase the value in the Link sounds with file size greater than box to a value greater than the file size of the MP3 file. For example if the file size is 4.5MB then you will need to include a value higher than 4500. A good general purpose size that should incorporate most song files is 6000 as most mp3 files are less than 6MB. Be careful as some classical music tracks could be longer than this.

The only downside is that the file size of the final file could be quite large.

There is a 50 Mb limit for embedding WAV files. For eample if you had two WAV files of 34 MB the you will be able to embed them, but it would make your file size over 68MB.

The second question that we get asked ........

How to Embed mp3 Sounds

Most places will tell you that only wav files can be embedded in powerpoint. All other sound formats are linked. Since mp3 files can be 10 x smaller it would be very useful if you could embed them. Linked files can cause problems .

You can and here's how:

The technique is to add a header to the .mp3 file that will convince PowerPoint that it is actually a wav file. Although this will change the file name to "something.wav" the file remains an mp3 file, the same size as the original and will play in PowerPoint as an mp3 file. NOTE this only seems to work with PCs not with Macs.

You will need to download a free program called CDex to add the header. You can get it here CDex. The download page is a little confusing but the file you need is the windows exe version (cdex_170b2_ enu.exe)

With CDex use "Convert > "Add a RIFF wav header to mp2/mp3" to produce a file that will be virtually identical to the mp3 file but will have the .wav suffix and can be embedded using either of the techniques in Embedding Sound Files. The headered file should be found in the same folder as the original mps file.

If you are starting with a wav file and want to coonvert it to mp3 to reduce it's size then CDex will do this too. Choose convert > WAV files to Compressed Audio. Before you do this check Options>Settings > Filename tab and make sure you know where the converted file will be saved!

Many people speak of RIFF wav files as a special type of wav file. This is not the case RIFF stands for "Resource Interchange Fle Format" and applies to all wav files . You have not converted the mp3 to a RIFF wav merely convinced PowerPoint that the mp3 IS a normal wav file. RIFF wav has however slipped into technically incorrect common usage to mean an mp3 file with a wav header.

20 Tips for More Efficient Google Searches

For millions of people, Google is an indispensable search tool that they use every day, in all facets of their lives. From work or school, research, to looking up movies and celebrities to news and gossip, Google is the go-to search engine.

But instead of just typing in a phrase and wading through page after page of results, there are a number of ways to make your searches more efficient.

Some of these are obvious ones, that you probably know about. But others are lesser-known, and others are known but not often used. Use this guide to learn more about, or be reminded of, some of the best ways to get exactly what you're looking for, and quickly.

1. Either/or. Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "|" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. [dumb | little | man]

2. Quotes. If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. ["dumb little man"] will only find that exact phrase. [dumb "little man"] will find pages that contain the word dumb and the exact phrase "little man".

3. Not. If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol. [-dumb little man] will return pages that contain "little" and "man" but that don't contain "dumb".

4. Similar terms. Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. [~dumb little man -dumb] will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man".

5. Wildcard. The "*" symbol is a wildcard. This is useful if you're trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can't remember the exact lyrics. [can't * me love lyrics] will return the Beatles song you're looking for. It's also useful for finding stuff only in certain domains, such as
educational information: ["dumb little man" research *.edu].

6. Advanced search. If you can't remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search.

7. Definitions. Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.

8. Calculator. One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.

9. Numrange. This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["best books 2002..2007] will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers).

10. Site-specific. Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. [site:dumblittleman .com leo] will search for the term "leo" only within this blog.

11. Backlinks. The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however.

Convert Powerpoint Presentations to Flash with GMail PPT Viewer

GMail now has an inbuilt PPT viewer that lets you view Powerpoint attachment as a Flash picture slideshow in the web browser itself without requiring Microsoft PowerPoint application.

This slideshow feature of GMail will be useful since you no longer have to download the full PPT attachment in order to view that 16th slide of the presentation.

Here are two additional situations where it may help:

1. If you have to view a presentation on some computer that has no copy of PowerPoint, gmail yourself the PPT file and watch the slides inside the web browser.

2. GMail converts every slide of your Powerpoint presentation to a Flash (swf) file - if you manually advance the entire PPT slideshow using the arrows, all the slides will become available as Flash files in your browser's temp folder.

Just a quick way of transforming Powerpoint slides into SWF documents without using any desktop conversion software. The swf files may then be embedded in your blog for sharing with readers. Nothing great since Scribd can also convert your PPT to Flash paper.

View or Search Your Web Browser History in a Picture Timeline

Thumbstrips is a wonderful Firefox extension that helps you view recently visited web pages in a visual manner - it's a more user friendly and powerful approach than the native Firefox History view (Ctrl+H).

Thumbstrips, like an automatic screen capture program, takes screenshots of the websites that you are visiting and also records other details like how long you stayed on that web page and the number of times you viewed that page in your current session.

With recording turned on, press F2 and the website thumbnail images will display as a filmstrip in chronological order - move your cursor over the thumbnails to browse through your web history or right click any image to get more details about your interaction with that particular webpage.

Since thumbstrips will also save the associated HTML source code of web pages, you can use it for searching the browser history with keywords that may be in the title, URL or body of the webpage. The thumbnail images can also be saved to a local folder or shared with friends.

Fix Worm.Win32.VB.el virus infected systems

These days several computers infected with Worm.Win32.VB.el virus.
By installing a good updated anti virus(Kasper sky,nod32,avg),we can remove the virus easily.but after removal we will face some problems in our computer such as cannot view hidden files and folders,cannot open partitions by double click....etc

Problem that will occur in hidden files and folders :-

when we want to view hidden and system files on the Windows XP SP2 and for this purpose normally we are going to Tools/Folder Options/View and removing tick from Hide Protected operating system files and checking Show hidden files and folders
option. But the windows doesn't show them anyway. if we are check once again view settings
and the system automatically checks the Hide hidden files and folders option.

Reason for the above problem:-

Scan system with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.1.411 and it will find several infected areas
with Worm.Win32.VB.el and several files like sal.xls.exe. it will remove the infected files when we are giving permission to delete .
To solve this problem Go to the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\
Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

DELETE the value CheckedValue in the right window. (Its type should be REG_SZ and data should be 2.)

Now create a new DWORD value called CheckedValue (same as above, except that the type is REG_DWORD). Modify the value data to 1 (0x00000001).

This should let you change the "Hidden Files and Folders" option.

Aand also the virus creates a hidden file named autorun.inf in whole disks.this file containing things like this or similar :

The problem will be solved if just deleted this file but we cannot view the hidden files.
So we can use one of the folowing ways to delete the hidden file.
1)use Total Commander to see the autorun.inf file and delete it.
2)Unhide files by going to Start->Run and type"regsvr32 /u occache.dll"and hit OK.
logoff and relogon ur pc ..
open your drive and delete "autorun.inf" file
after deleting the file re hide files - Start->Run and type in "regsvr32 occache.dll" and hit OK.
(make sure you have cleaned the virus before doing this steps)
3)Open nero and explore the files in the effected disk.Open the autorun.inf and remove the contents which written in the file and save it .{if you cant save the file the go to the properties of the file and uncheck read only (all tasks from nero)}

If you are getting the error message


"the c:\ application cannot be run in win32 mode"
or similar while opening a drive, use the following method .

go to Start >Run  then type CMD
in command prompt type cd c:\ (or d:\,e:\ depending on your error message )

C:\>attrib -S -H -R autorun.inf
delete the file by typing C:\>del autorun.inf or open your drive and delete the autorun.inf

Google appears to be about to take on Skype and other VoIP services with the addition of a dialpad to Google Talk.

Members of the Google Blogoscoped forums found this image and some basic information on the new application from an internal Google apps resources overview [which has now been taken down].

The new addition would ideally let users dial landlines and cell phones using Google Talk, which is now limited to dialing out only to other users who have Google Talk or compatible VoIP solutions.

eBay’s Skype of course has the ability to dial from PC to phone using VoIP technology, and Skype brings in a hefty amount of revenue via the SkypeOut program, where users purchase minutes via eBay’s PayPal.

If Google Talk does charge for external phone calls, expect Google to offer cheaper rates than Skype if Google Talk users pay with Google Checkout, Google’s online payment system program.

Comparitively, Google Checkout offers discounts for merchants and buyers who use the system for a purchase.

One other option would be free PC to phone outbound calls paid for by serving contextually targeted advertisements via Google Talk in the same manner as GMail based upon voice recognition, but of course doing so would set off all sorts of red flags.

Since the Google Talk Dialpad seems to have been tested in Google Apps, which are built for user personalized homepages, perhaps their is some way that Google could spin targeted advertising into the equation to supplement calling fees.

How to Boost a Router Signal

Wireless routers typically have ranges of 100 feet or more, however there are many factors that can lower this range, making your signal and signal strength lower than you might like. Interference can be caused by metal, other signals and other devices that use wireless frequencies like cell phones and microwave ovens. There are many methods you can use to boost your signal strength.

Steps

1. Check for interference
* Replace devices in your home that can interfere with network traffic on the 2.4GHz frequency range. These devices include many cordless phones, microwave ovens, and the like.
* Check your signal strength with these devices on and off to determine if they are the cause of your signal problems.
* Buy a wireless network analyzer to track down the source of interference.
2. Change your signal channel
* Routers can broadcast on a series of channels, between one and eleven. Change to a channel that will allow your router a clear signal between other wireless networks.
* Use a software utility to analyze which networks are using which channel.
* Configure your system for an unused channel.
3. Reposition your Router.
* Raise the router up as far as possible to increase the effective broadcast range.
* Move the router away from any metal including metal shelving, filing cabinets and similar common objects.
4. Raise your Xmit power.
* Check your router's documentation and configuration utility for the ability to change the Xmit power of your router: the amount of power it uses to transmit the signal. generally you can boost this number by up to 50mW, however you do risk overheating opr damaging your router.
5. Replace the Antenna.
* Unscrew and replace the broadcast antenna on your router with a model that delivers more power. Not all routers allow for new antenna to be attached, but many do.
6. Install a Repeater.
* Purchase a repeater. A repeater is a piece of hardware that acts like a wireless network expander. The repeater takes the signal from your router and boosts it to increase the range.
* Wireless repeaters are increasingly common and affordable and will probably be available in your local computer store, or on the Internet.
7. Install a Wireless Amplifier
* Purchase and attach a wireless amplifier, also known as a booster, directly to your router. A booster can be more affordable than a repeater as they only increase the strength of your existing signal, rather than the strength and range.
* Use a bi-directional amplifier to increase both your inward and outbound speeds.
8. Make a Reflector with Tinfoil.
* Cut a tinfoil circle with the tinfoil on the inside of a piece of paper or some cardboard large enough to wrap around the router.
* Place the tinfoil circle over the router.
* Run the cords over the top of the circle.

Tips

* Older and traditional homes have walls made from wooden studs, while newer construction in office buildings, malls and condominiums are often constructed with metal studs in the wall. metal studs can interfere with a router signal quite badly, so consider your building type when diagnosing your signal.

Steps

1. If it is a desktop simply locate the CMOS battery, remove it and the CMOS password jumper on the motherboard (if present) leave unplugged and powered off for at least a minute. Put CMOS battery back in turn on and boot up.
2. Laptops can be trickier, especially if it's a newer model. If it has a security chip on the motherboard forget about it. You either have to physically remove the chip or contact the mfg for the "master" password.

Tips

* Remember that passwords are Case Sensitive. The last two passwords in the AWARD BIOS list are in Russian.
* Sometimes the bios reset jumper has a "handle" and is colored a bright color to make it easy to locate. Also, look in your case near the bottom. If it is a manufactured computer then it probably came with a little sticker with the jumpers and the location of the reset jumper.

Warnings

* Don't just start pulling jumpers on the motherboard. Make sure you know where it was and in what position in case anything goes wrong put it back.
* If you turn your computer on and it makes strange noises / beeps, you should contact the vendor, manufacture, or a tech guy to fix it.

There are numerous ways to keep your mind sharp while keeping a good, well-rounded attitude.

Heed to this next statement: No matter how sharp a mind you may have, no one can remember everything. Therefore, don't beat yourself up trying. Learning to write things down helps.
Everyone has some type of special talent, so find out what yours is and use it. Be open to trying different things. You could find a hidden talent that you are not aware of.
Maintain a regular exercise program. It will help to relieve tension. Relieving tension alone can improve your thought patterns. The less tension that you have the sharper your mind will become. You will begin to develop a better attitude as time goes on. You should find a program that works for you.
Some people find that writing poetry can be relaxing plus it is a great way to express yourself. Not everyone writes poetry so find your own mode of self expression. Try sewing, playing a musical instrument, or gardening.

WEP: Wireless security's broken skeleton in the closet

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) as a wireless security solution has been analysts' wireless whipping boy for years. But, for some reason, many companies still have some level of WEP in use within their organizations.

Recently, however, a team of German researchers devised a new attack against WEP that can cause it to fail in roughly 20 seconds on a busy 802.11g network and 80 seconds on 802.11b. If the network is idle, it can cause WEP to fail in 52 seconds on 802.11g or just over three minutes on 802.11b. This new attack uses the aircrack-ptw algorithm.

Many experts agree that although this new way to crack WEP and expose the network is frightening, it should serve as an additional reminder that WEP isn't all that secure in the first place and that companies should be looking at newer wireless security standards such as WPA or WPA2.

"It's just yet another wake-up call to the people who should be using the standardized WPA2," said Burton Group senior analyst Paul DeBeasi. "It's a reminder of how fast someone can crack into your network and access information."

Lisa Phifer, vice president of Core Competence Inc., took DeBeasi's warnings one step further.

"WEP was broken back in 2000, and better solutions -- first WPA, now WPA2 -- have been readily available for five years," she said. "Any company that cares about WLAN security should have migrated off WEP a long time ago."

WEP cracking tools have been getting steadily faster over the years by reducing the traffic required to guess a WEP key, according to Phifer. The latest attack scenario reduced the time required to crack a WEP key from an hour to less than a minute, using active packet injection. Still, with WEP's inherent lack of security, she said, the new cracking tool may have little impact.

"Anyone with incentive to crack your WEP key can probably wait an hour," she said. "Those WLANs still using WEP keys due to legacy equipment are probably not using anything like 802.1x to automatically refresh those keys. If a static WEP key is used for six months, an hour isn't going to greatly impact their window of exposure."

Phifer doesn't mince words when telling companies how to protect themselves from WEP cracking and other vulnerabilities: "Avoid using WEP. I can't stress that enough."

She suggests that companies retire and replace legacy devices that don't do at least WPA-PSK.

"But, if you really can't do that, isolate WEP devices on their own VLAN/subnet and do everything you can to permit only expected traffic from known devices," Phifer said. "For example, block all but expected application connect requests and authenticate the device/user when they connect to the application server. This won't keep traffic private, but it will stop key crackers from penetrating further into your network. If you have a wireless IPS, configure it to alert you to active WEP cracking attacks, and decide what action to take -- shut down affected APs, re-key devices, physically track down the intruder."

AirDefense, maker of a WLAN protection platform, this month introduced a WEP cloaking module designed to help companies preserve their investment in legacy handheld devices and to avoid the costs of expensive upgrades and training.

The WEP cloaking module uses the AirDefense Enterprise platform using wireless sensors to protect handheld devices from passive and active attempts to crack WEP encryption keys.

AirDefense makes a tool to protect WEP deployments, but David Thomas, vice president of product marketing, said companies should still be looking to upgrade.

"We've been out there telling customers for a long time that WEP is obsolete and they should get rid of it," he said. "But certain folks have a great number of embedded devices, and they're too costly to get rid of."

In retail, for example, many devices support WEP only and run at about $2,000 apiece, meaning an upgrade would cost a great deal.

"When they're looking at upgrades, it costs a fortune," Thomas said, citing one AirDefense retail customer that would have had to pay $8 million for device upgrades. "It's not that they don't want to do it. If customers have a way to proactively move away from WEP, we want them to."

Thomas noted that the recent finding by researchers confirms the need to phase out WEP and reinforces the idea that tools like AirDefense's WEP cloaking module should be a stop-gap solution.

"Research like this is always an interesting and good thing," Thomas said. "It's basically saying that WEP is broken again."

Many companies feel "guilty" about still using WEP, he said, and for many it's a skeleton in the closet.

The WEP cloaking module lets companies transition from WEP to WPA or WPA2 at their own pace, Thomas said. It's a stop-gap solution that allows them to upgrade on their own time.

DeBeasi called it "unfortunate" that many companies still use WEP. Still, he is quick to admit that in the world of WLAN security, "as bad as WEP is, it's better than nothing. It's so easy to take it out of the package, turn it on and that's that." DeBeasi said some companies avoid deploying newer wireless security standards like WPA and WPA2 because they can be seen as complicated and have many moving parts. Upgrading requires supplemental software on laptops, configuration of network infrastructure, configuration of back-end authentication servers, and other steps.

"For some, security is a tad complicated," he said.

Some companies that still use WEP -- like the companies AirDefense targets with its WEP cloaking module -- probably can't afford to buy the equipment necessary to upgrade to WPA or WPA2. Some can't afford to upgrade laptops that support WPA clients. Many retail companies, for example, use barcode scanners and other devices that can only support WEP.

"If a company is still using WEP, I tell them, 'I'm glad you have something on, but…'" DeBeasi said, adding that for those who went from having no wireless security to using WEP, he reminds them, "Don't rest on your laurels."

According to Phifer, companies that use devices that won't integrate with WPA should be the only exception to the rule.

"There are certainly exceptions like small-footprint devices with old embedded Wi-Fi chips that don't speak WPA -- point of sale terminals, barcode scanners, handsets," she said. "Companies that are unable or unwilling to upgrade those legacy devices were already extremely vulnerable to WEP cracking before aircrack-ptw."
